Jonah Lomu - A Living Rugby Legend
27th December 2008
|
The sight of All Black’s Jonah Lomu pile-driving his way to the try line, carrying half the opposition team on his back, is undoubtedly one of the most exciting in sport, and JONAH stylishly charts the rise of this phenomenal young man. Featuring interviews with the disarmingly boyish star himself, as well as awed tributes from team-mates and opponents, this is a celebration of one rugby union player to have transcended the sport. It’s not hard to see why. Lomu off the pitch is personable and self-deprecating. On the pitch he’s all but unstoppable, and here’s the evidence from his career to date, including amazing footage of Lomu as an enormous schoolboy player in 1993. His unfortunate opponents that day can reflect that the following year Jonah became the youngest All-Black in history. At 63 minutes long, the producers have had to strike a balance between action and context, and though there’s only time for the best of the highlights of events at the World Cups in 1995 and 1999 and beyond, it’s a largely successful compromise, featuring classic tries that bear repeated viewing. However, Lomu’s battle against Nephrotic Syndrome–the kidney disorder that almost snuffed out his career–is glossed over in a couple of sentences, and students of rugby might hope for a little more analysis of the games themselves. That said there’s at least a dozen slices of action here that will take your breath away. ON THE DVD: A straightforward text biography and some stats are augmented by 26 minutes of extra footage, including a rather odd discussion about Lomu’s favourite music. The temptation to plug his commercial interests is not passed up, though the “Making of…” features on his Adidas adverts are strong enough to merit inclusion. The “Favourite Moments” and “Extra Tries” chapters are the stand-out features. –Alex Hankin |

Battle Of The Giants - New Zealand vs South Africa 1986 : All Blacks rugby tour of South Africa

This is the complete DVD (as some years ago was the Video) with all the highlights from the “Rebel Tour” of the “New Zealand All Blacks” (nicknamed for the tour as “Cavaliers”) to “South Africa” in 1986.
The twelve matches of the tour (including the four “Test” between the “Cavaliers” and the “Springboks”) were hard-fought and nail-biting. The rythm of the matches were very similar to the professional days that are living now. A high speed game, with high skills levels and of course with many talented players (stars of the history of these two great rugby nations) such as: New Zealand’s Andy Dalton, Hika Reid, Andy Haden, Jock Hobbs, Murray Mexted, Grant Fox, Warwick Taylor, Craig Green… and South Africa’s Uli Schmidt, Flippie van der Merwe, Schalk Burger Sr. (the father of the current flanker of the “SPRINGBOKS”), Louis Moolman, Wahl Bartmann, Gert Smal, Jannie Breedt, Naas Botha, Carel & Michael du Plessis, Danie Gerber… As I wrote as title, without doubt this DVD is a must for any fan of RUGBY and specially for the “SPRINGBOKS” or “NEW ZEALAND” (”ALL BLACKS”) fans. |

The Springboks - Tri-Nations Champions 2004

What could not be said about the Bokke? 2003 Was the worst year for springbok rugby as Rudolph Streauli put them through Camp Stalingrad - naked training, forcing them underwater….basically not he best way to get the best out of a team. Along came Jake White and took over the reigns as the Tri-Nations season drew nearer. Not much was being said about this team until their first few games. Along came the Tri-Nations that saw them pitted against the best two teams in the world, Australia & New Zealand. Away from home they nearly got two unbelievable wins only to be shoved out the way during the last few minutes of each game. The home leg of the T-Nats was ever so sweet for the Boks and supporters. They thrashed New Zealand and finally beat Australia in a nailbiting finish. This DVD is the king of Bok rugby at it’s best. You could not do without this if you are a Rugby Fan. |

As Clive Woodward’s men descended upon the Southern hemisphere for the final leg of a long hard season, history was to be created. Victory over the New Zealand Maori kicked off the Zurich Summer Tour of Australia and New Zealand, but two further stern tests lay ahead: The Siege of Wellington – New Zealand 13 – 15 England England have had many special days but this was something extraordinary! Fifteen points from the boot of fly-half Johnny Wilkinson handed England their first victory over the All Blacks on New Zealand soil for 30 years. It was far from a classic, but the performance epitomized the spirit of Clive Woodward’s team, as they stood firm when it mattered the most. With the rain sweeping the ground, conditions were difficult. Reduced to 13 in the second half, the All Blacks had the advantage but were unable to turn over a resolute England defence and four times a six-man English pack survived the onslaught of a full All Black scrum. It was England’s day as they created their own slice of history. The Massacre in Melbourne – Australia 14 – 25 England History created as the Wallabies are defeated on their own turf and the season ends with a perfect ten. Combining forward power with pace in the backs, England romped home to victory in Australia’s own back yard for the first time in history. Touching new heights, England’s aerial dominance was only one aspect of a thoroughly convincing performance. Jonny Wilkinson was having one of those days, as he carved open opportunity after opportunity with a fine array of angled and short passes, and when he timed his delayed pass to perfection for Northampton Saints man Ben Cohen, the big winger sidestepped the Wallabies’ fullback Chris Latham to score under the posts for England’s third try. Sailor went over for a deserved try near the end, but England were out of reach and Wilkinson capped off the day with a penalty on the final hooter. |
Barbarians v All Blacks 1973

|
DVD Description This is considered by many to be the best rugby game ever televised, featuring ‘The greatest try of all time’, Gareth Edwards’ touchdown for the Barbarians against the New Zealand All Blacks, in the 4th minute. The try was the first score of the game that the Bararians went on to win by 23-11. Played in the true spirit of the game, both sides played quality rugby. It was a game of attack and counter attack, with only one winner - rugby football. Special Features |
